Wave EmotionI painted this after a special time painting out on the west coast of Ireland, these days known as the Wild Atlantic Way. As well as painting under the sea spray, I took many photos - the reference for this one stuck in my mind, it seems to convey to me the essence of wildness. The rock formations at Dooneen pier (Smerwick Harbour, Co. Kerry), have a beautiful redness that turns to magenta when wet, and together with the deep water makes for great hue and value contrasts. I collected the colours both factually on the palette and through sketching while traveling the coast, and did pencil sketches before attempting this panel.
This is an oil painting, on gessoed ‘Fabriano Tela’, mounted on board.
