I’m working on a painting of the sea, and this is my first structured pencil study of it. ‘Working’ I say losely, because mostly I’m just thinking about it.

6b and 2b pencil on paper. The sea off the rocks at Smerwick Harbour, West Kerry.

It began in my little room, painting fruit on a glass shelf, thinking about the perfect reflection. Then with paint out at the sea collecting colours, studying the motion, the horizon, talking to friends, about life, about living with a great respect for the landscape and the sea.

The working title is ‘Wave Emotion’, since it’s pretty much universally acknowledged that contemplating the motion of the sea awakens emotions and encourages the energy of introspection.
