Awakening out of winter, I finished this gull painting last week, it’s been on my mind and I’ve been sketching the idea since being on Achill last year. In the shallows, the seaweed turns over with the tide, mixing with the foam – rich pickings for the gull.
I’m sorting through my sketches of Finsbury Park, North London, these are a mixture of paint, pencil, Wacom Inkling, pan pastel, watercolour and conte crayon. Some are done in Finsbury Park and some from photographs.

There are so many places to paint Sybil Head from, I chose this one because of the two fine horses. I intended this to become a full painting, but I really like this version, with the cliffs of Sybil Head in the distance, and the fine horses in the field.

Line and Colour I’ve been organising through my compositional ideas in the park, they are slow to come together from sketches into paintings, there are so many elements to consider.
Spending Time in the Park At the moment, I’m developing compositions around the park. The colours are more subdued than the landscape of the west of Ireland & the wild atlantic way, so it’s taking a lot of getting used to.
It seems to me this journey into paint is a dance around what is learnt in life and what is imagined in the heart, and so this piece came to me.
